A child's question is not a profile: why on-device AI protects privacy

When AI runs on the phone, a child’s questions never leave it. What that means for privacy, what parents can see, and what still needs care.

Children ask wonderful questions. Why is the sky blue? Why do people get malaria? Is it normal to feel nervous before an exam? When those questions go to an online service, they can become something else: a record, stored on someone else's computer, tied to an account.

When the AI lives on the phone, that never happens. The question is asked, answered and kept on the phone in your house.

What happens to a question in Aboki

  • It is answered on the phone. The model is a file on the phone; the question is never sent to a server to be answered.
  • There is no account. Your child does not sign up, log in or give a name, age or email.
  • There is no advertising or tracking. Aboki has no ads and no analytics tools watching how it is used.
  • In homework mode, there is no internet at all. Aboki blocks every network use in code, even checking for updates.

Privacy from the world, not from you: the parent can still see what was asked.

Private from the world, not from you

Keeping questions off the internet is different from keeping them secret from parents. In homework mode, the Parent area shows every question your child asked, and the chat screen tells them so: “Your grown-up can see the questions you ask here.” We think children deserve to know that, and parents deserve to see it.

If your child asks something that is not for children, Aboki does not answer it, suggests they talk to a parent, carer or teacher they trust, and marks the question for you.

What still needs care

On-device AI removes one big risk. It does not remove all of them:

  • Anyone holding the phone can read the chats. Chats stay on the phone until you delete them. Press and hold a chat to delete it for good.
  • Your PIN is the lock. Choose one your child cannot guess, and do not let them watch you type it.
  • Screen pinning needs a screen lock. Without one, a child can unpin Aboki and open other apps.

Less online, more learning

The safest internet for a young child doing homework is often no internet. Aboki gives them a patient helper without the feeds, links and adverts that come with being online. Read the full detail on our privacy page, or see how to set up homework mode.

Quick answers

Does Aboki send my child’s questions anywhere?
No. Aboki answers on the phone itself and has no accounts, analytics or advertising. In homework mode it never uses the internet at all.

Try it on an Android phone, then talk to us.

Android 7 or newer, 3 GB of memory or more. Install the app, then add a model by downloading it once or copying it from another phone.
